PK Subban clarified Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews’ overtime win celebration (Source: Imagn)
On Thursday, Lindsay Dunn posted a video of her interview with former NHL player P.K. Subban on Instagram. In the clip, she asked Subban about rumors that Auston Matthews’ overtime goal celebration against the Devils was directed at him.
The game played on Dec. 10, 2024, saw the Toronto Maple Leafs overcome a rough start. They were outshot 15-1 in the first period and 27-6 after two periods, but managed to force overtime. Pontus Holmberg scored a key short-handed goal to tie the game in the third period.
In overtime, Auston Matthews chased down a loose puck, outpaced Brett Pesce and beat Jacob Markström to secure the win. His celebration was surprising as he skated past Subban’s seat and apparently pointed in his direction with excitement after missing several earlier chances.
Subban, seated near the glass, captured the moment, leading to speculation about the celebration’s meaning. In his respnse to Dunn, Subban explained the situation.
“I had a couple of my old teammates [who] said that after the game, ” Subban said, “I was sitting watching the game and a couple guys go ‘You were at the game?’ and I said ‘Yeah I was sitting with Blitzer and Tie’ and they said ‘Oh we all thought that was Denzel Washington, we didn’t even know that was you’ so that’s what I was told after the game so when I replay it I don’t think he was pointing at me. I think he was pointing at Tie”
Subban’s comments clarified that the celebration was not directed at him but likely at Tie Domi, a close supporter of Matthews. This clears up any misunderstanding about the emotional celebration.
Auston Matthews’ strong return following injury
Auston Matthews has been impressive since returning from his second injury this season, scoring two goals and adding five assists in his last three games. He credits his linemates Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies, who had a standout game against Boston, with Knies scoring a hat trick.
“I feel good, I think every night I’ve felt better You want to keep that momentum going,” Matthews said, per Yard Barker.”… I just want to take it one game at a time.”
Before his return, he had 11 goals and 12 assists. Now, he boasts 13 goals and 17 assists in 27 games.
With Auston Matthews finding his form again and back-to-back wins against the Flyers and Islanders, the Maple Leafs lead the Atlantic Division with a 27-13-2 record. A healthier roster and stronger defense could propel the team to a deep playoff run.
