MLB insider sheds light on Tanner Scott, Luis Castillo, Roki Sasaki’s rumored Mets connection – Source: Imagn
The New York Mets had an inspired run in the second half of last year that saw them go toe to toe against eventual World Series winners Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
Although the Mets failed to topple the Dodgers in the NLCS, the fans have been buoyed by their postseason run. The Mets front office made a statement signing in the offseason by bringing in Juan Soto on a blockbuster $765 million deal to strengthen the roster.
Apart from Soto, the Mets have also added pitching pieces in veteran starter Sean Manaea and former New York Yankees closer Clay Holmes in the offseason.
MLB insider Andy Martino believes the Mets can take a dip in the relief market for Tanner Scott, but it’s unlikely to be a long-term deal.
He said on SNY:
“The Mets have some willingness to spend at the top end of the relief market if it’s a deal that makes sense for them is always with David Stearns. This is about years, more than dollars, because he has a lot of Steve Cohen’s resources at his disposal.
“If you look at a guy like Tanner Scott, there’s all he’s always been rumored to be seeking a three or four-year deal. There might be some willingness there to go. High AAV for a shorter-term deal. If you can get Tanner Scott for two years at a high number, for those two years, I can see that as being a fit for the Mets.”
While Martino picked Tanner Scott as a potential addition to the bullpen, he believes the Mets are unlikely to add any more arms to the starting rotation despite Luis Castillo and Roki Sasaki as potential options.
He added:
“They feel pretty good about where they are with the rotation. For example, Luis Castillo in Seattle is available in trade trade. Frankly, I’m not hearing a lot of optimism in the industry that the Mets would be the team for Roki Sasaki. So it seems as if what we see now in the rotation depth chart is going to be pretty much what they roll into this season with.”
Mets officials reportedly met Tanner Scott on Tuesday
Tanner Scott is arguably the most prominent free agent reliever left on the market. The 30-year-old posted a 9-6 record last year, splitting time with the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres.
He had a career-high 22 saves in the 2024 season, making him a coveted name in free agency. According to a report by The Athletic, Scott spoke with Mets officials on Tuesday, adding fuel to a potential move to Citi Field with Spring Training looming.
