The Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Kraken got a huge surprise as the entire arena went pitch black during their game on Saturday

The Edmonton Oilers and Seattle Kraken got quite a surprise on Saturday night.

In the opening moments of their game the Oilers and Kraken players, both on the ice and on the bench, were left completely blind as the entire building suddenly and unexpectedly went dark. The game was just 11 seconds old at that point but nearly every light in the building went dark leaving the players in near total darkness.

The only lights that appeared to remain functional were the ones on the advertisements around the ice, draw your own conclusions and assumptions from that information.

Here is a look at how the lights shut down during the course of a regular play, one that unfortunately for the Oilers was while they were attacking in the offensive zone:

The good news here is that the lights only went out for a brief moment, a few seconds at the most, but it was enough to completely disrupt the flow of play and result in a stoppage of play as well. Any potential scoring chances the Oilers could have created were wiped away, perhaps a little hometown cooking on the part of the crew working the lights in Seattle?

It is also worth noting that there is something a little funny about the power going out at “Climate Pledge Arena” of all places, I’m sure we will be seeing some wise cracks made about that on social media tonight.

Things appear to be back to normal however, and I wonder if we will get any kind of information regarding what may have gone wrong to temporarily shut down the lighting in such a manner.

Thankfully no one was injured as a result of this incident.
