As the MLB offseason rolls on, the anticipation about where two-time Home Run Derby winner Pete Alonso will play is mounting. The first baseman is yet to agree terms with the New York Mets about re-signing, and there are reports that the conversations have stalled.
On MLB Tonight on the MLB Network, New York Mets legend Ron Darling shared his thoughts about Pete Alonso’s future with the club.
“No one hits home runs as much as Pete Alonso except Aaron Judge,” said Darling. (0:50 onwards)
Since 2019, Alonso has hit the second-most home runs in the majors with 226. The feat has only been eclipsed by Aaron Judge (232).
Reports have been circulating that Alonso’s camp, whose lead representative is super agent Scott Boras, offered the Mets a three-year deal with opt outs. However, talks have stagnated because the financial terms are yet to be agreed upon.
“It’s very rare for a Scott Boras client to propose or sign a deal of three years or less,” Darling said. “But Alonso has an interesting history with the club. This may be an olive branch from the camp.”
Darling also praised Alonso’s abilities and offered a prediction of his future:
“By the end of his career, this young man will hold every single offensive stat category in Mets history.”
Mets legend Ron Darling gives advice about Pete Alonso sweepstakes
Slugging star Pete Alonso is yet to re-sign with the New York Mets. The 30-year-old is third in the all-time Mets home run list with 226 homers and is 27 away from passing legend Daryl Strawberry on the coveted list.
Mets legend Ron Darling warned Alonso’s camp about the uncertainty first baseman in today’s game face compared to previous seasons:
“It’s very fungible with organizations and how they judge talent these days. 10 years ago, Alonso’s kind of player would immediately be signed to a long term deal like Prince Fielder, but it’s changed.”
The former pro also voiced his praise for Alonso’s durabilit,y having missed just 24 games since his debut in 2019. Darling also put an emphasis on the subject of Juan Soto’s protection in the batting order, which Alonso would provide.
