It’s common to hear about TV shows having an abrupt run due to poor ratings. But it’s very rare to hear of a TV serial being asked to shut shop even though it’s at it’s peak. Tara was one such show that was forcibly stopped, as claimed by Vinta Nanda, the brainchild behind Tara.

SHOCKING: Vinta Nanda claims that Samrat Prithviraj director Dr Chandrapraksh Dwivedi forcibly shut down her cult TV show ‘Tara’: ‘”He told me, ‘You are ruining our country. Mera bas chalta toh aapko

(desh se) bahar fek deta’”

In an interview to Siddharth Kannan, Vinta Nanda dropped the bomb that once Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, of Samrat Prithviraj (2022) fame, came on board and he asked her to stop the show and even blasted her.

Vinta Nanda said, “In 1997, all executives changed overnight. Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi took charge as the CEO of Zee TV. Tara was running for five years at its peak. Yet he called me for a meeting and said, ‘Yeh serial aap 4 din mein bandh karo’.”

Vinta Nanda further said, “I asked him the reason. He said, ‘Aap ke jaisi auraton ko iss desh mein rehna hi nahi chahiye. You are ruining our country. Mera bas chalta toh aapko (desh se) bahar fek deta’. That was the first jolt that came to me. I wondered ‘where has this come from?’. I told him ‘You are the boss. You decide what you want to do’.”

Vinta Nanda added, “That’s when it hit me that there must be many people getting angry with the show and they were mostly men.” She also added, “No women, whether or not conservative, was complaining because she was seeing herself in the characters.”

Vinta Nanda then said that the end of Tara stopped the progressive wave on television, “Then, TV mein saas-bahu ka poora daur chala. The momentum built by Tara was thwarted.”

Vinta Nanda, at another point in the interview, also opened up about the craze generated by Tara saying, “Those were the days when emails didn’t exist. I used to go to Zee TV’s office every Wednesday to meet Kamlesh Pandey. There used to be a response department at the entrance of the office where they used to store fan mails. I am not joking. Laakhon, karodon mein chhitiyaan aati thi. Almas, who was in charge of the department, would stop me and insist that I should read at least 20 of these letters. These letters were full of praise. Kabhi kisi ne kuch galat nahin bola.”

Tara starred Navneet Nishan, Amita Nangia, Alok Nath, Rakesh Bedi and others.
