The ugly side of minor hockey reared its ugly head again, this time in the Pacific Northwest where a parent went after 13- and 14-year-old referees, says Ken Campbell.
Jody Henderson has been involved in youth minor hockey for over 40 years, and he’s never seen anything this bad. In a video that has since gone viral, a parent in Seattle went after two teenage officials and shoved them to the ice.
In video footage of the alleged assault at a U-12 house league game in the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association, a parent of one of the players made his way onto the ice and attacked the two officials. The police report, a copy of which was obtained by The Hockey News, reports the suspect is 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds.
“Both of the victims are likely not equal in weight or size cumulatively,” the report says.
And while the person involved in the allegation claims his son was involved in a fight on the ice, “and was punched and kicked for about 30 seconds and the referees did nothing to stop the assault,” the police report said, “there is no evidence that supports (the man’s) claim that he acted in defense of his son at the time of the assault. Multiple direct witnesses and video surveillance corroborated the account of the victims. (The) assault on two juveniles was clearly unprovoked and the conduct was especially egregious due to the size and age difference between the victims and the suspect.”
It’s not bad enough that this happened, but what makes it worse is it’s not an isolated case. If you Google this incident, you’ll see a host of others that are similar to it. And that’s really sad.
Seattle Police said there is an investigation ongoing and that “probable cause exists for two counts of misdemeanor assault.” Police haven’t publicly named the man while the investigation continues.
