The Department of Player Safety has reviewed an incident involving Leafs’ Max Domi elbowing Flyers’ Garnet Hathaway, and they’ve determined a punishment.
Max Domi was in hot water with the NHL on Monday. The Maple Leafs forward was fined $5,000 by the league’s Department of Player Safety for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers winger Garnet Hathaway during the third period of Toronto’s 3-2 overtime victory on Sunday at Scotiabank Arena.
Max Domi was assessed a minor penalty for the infraction, a poor decision considering it came deep in the offensive zone with the score tied 2-2 at 5:13 of the third period.
Fortunately for Domi, the Leafs killed off the penalty and eventually won the game as Morgan Rielly scored the overtime winner. Domi did not speak to the media post-game.
The incident seemed to spill over from an earlier altercation between Garnet Hathaway and Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe in the first period. Hathaway collided with Toronto goalie Dennis Hildeby, at which point Jake McCabe dropped the gloves.
McCabe left the fight with an upper-body injury and did not return to the game. With the Leafs off on Monday, an update on McCabe’s status likely won’t come until Tuesday when the team travels to Philadelphia for the rematch against the Flyers.
If McCabe is unable to go, Toronto will need to call up a defenseman from the Marlies.
The most likely candidates are Marshall Rifai and the recently claimed Dakota Mermis. Conor Timmins has been a healthy scratch for three games and could play instead.
The fine to Domi is the maximum allowable under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement. The money will go to the players’ emergency assistance fund.
Domi and McCabe currently represent the team leads in penalty minutes with 32 each through 41 games this season.
