A blockbuster trade proposal has the Toronto Blue Jays beginning their rebuild by sending All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a National League heavyweight.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s Blue Jays have had yet another disappointing offseason, having missed out on marquee talents like Juan Soto (signed with the New York Mets), Corbin Burnes (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Teoscar Hernández (Los Angeles Dodgers).
Along with Vladdy Jr., All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette is entering the final year of his contract. With the Blue Jays failing to add any significant talent to bolster their playoff hopes in 2025, the only choice for GM Ross Atkins may be to deal both players.
Jim Riley of BALLCAP Sports proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has Toronto sending Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Mets for three promising prospects in shortstop Ronny Mauricio, outfielder Ryan Clifford, pitcher Blade Tidwell and veteran pitcher Tylor Megill.
The Mets are coming off a surprise trip to the NLCS, where they fell to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. New York won the Soto free agency sweepstakes, pushing themselves closer to the franchise’s first world championship since 1986.
But barring any surprises, the Mets stand to lose star slugger Pete Alonso in free agency. So adding a player like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would significantly reduce the damage of Alonso’s departure while closing the gap even further with the star-studded Dodgers.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Was Lights Out In 2024
While 2024 went down as one of the most disappointing seasons in Jays history, Vladdy Jr. had his best campaign since 2021. The second-generation star hit 30 homers with 103 RBI, a career-high .323 batting average and a tremendous .940 OPS.
Toronto’s best bet would be to extend Guerrero Jr. long-term, but they may have no choice but to move him for a massive return if they aren’t able to reach an extension before next year’s trade deadline.
