Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs fans can now order McDonald’s burgers named after Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid.
This is part of the fast-food chain’s brand-new “Showdown Menu” and includes the “Smoky Quarter Papi” and the “Big Mac-David” as premier items available for fans to purchase. McDonald’s has also revealed “The Hat Trick” triple cheeseburger as part of the new menu.
The new items were promoted through a series of cryptic social media posts sent between McDavid and Matthews earlier this month. It all culminated in the two superstars collaborating in a commercial together where they challenge each other to increasingly ridiculous trick shots.
It’s a modern-day remake of a classic McDonald’s ad from 1997 that saw Wayne Gretzky and Mats Sundin do the same.
“First one to miss, watches the winner eat,” McDavid proclaims to kick off the challenge.
It’s quite a treat for hockey fans to see two of the game’s best players face off in such a lighthearted and unique way. McDavid and Matthews trade a few chirps here and there as they compete, but the best part of the ad features another surprise appearance.
One of the challenges McDavid poses to Matthews includes Nickelback’s “Photograph” blaring in the background. It was a not-so-subtle nod to McDavid’s fandom of the Albertan band and one that many Oilers fans are bound to appreciate.
“You know you love ’em,” McDavid cheekily says to Matthews about the band.
These will not be permanent fixtures on the menu, so fans wanting to get in on the action will have limited time to do so.
