The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Friday morning that they have agreed to terms on a multi-year extension with 27-year-old defenseman Philippe Myers.

On Sunday, NHL goaltender, turned analyst and insider, Kevin Weekes reported the Leafs were working towards an extension for the undrafted defenceman.

Myers joined the Leafs on a one-year deal in July and was not eligible to sign an extension until January 1st, like like a handful of other Leafs.

The deal is a 2-year deal that will see Myers earn a reasonable $850K per season and provides the Leafs with more cost certainty and depth on their blueline the next couple of seasons along with some size, speed and physicality. The deal also provides Myers with some financial stability after a couple of 1-year deals, similar to Max Domi’s case previously.

Myers spent most of last season with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL, where he collected 23 points and had skated in 158 regular season NHL games prior to joining the Leafs this season.

After a tough start that saw him play just one game for the club between October and November, illnesses and injuries have allowed the New Brunswick native to skate in 11 of the Leafs’ past 16 games, averaging slightly more than 17 minutes of ice-time per game.
