The legendary Bollywood film Dil To Pagal Hai, released 25 years ago, left an everlasting mark on audiences with its captivating dance numbers and star-studded cast, including Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and Karisma Kapoor. Behind the film’s iconic dance sequences was renowned choreographer Shiamak Davar, whose involvement was pivotal in transforming the movie’s dance performances into unforgettable cinematic moments.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Shiamak revealed how he became involved in the project, crediting the persuasive efforts of Shah Rukh Khan and director Yash Chopra. It all began with a phone call from Shah Rukh’s wife, Gauri Khan, who was also Shiamak’s student at the time. Gauri informed Shiamak that Shah Rukh wanted to meet him, which took him by surprise.Over dinner, Shah Rukh shared his vision for Dil To Pagal Hai and expressed his desire for Shiamak to choreograph the film. Initially hesitant due to his dance style’s Western influence, Shiamak was concerned it might not resonate with Bollywood audiences.
However, Shah Rukh and Yash Chopra remained adamant, convincing Shiamak to take on the project. Yash Chopra even suggested using Shiamak’s own dancers for the film.
Despite his initial reservations, Shiamak’s work on Dil To Pagal Hai was met with acclaim, earning him the prestigious National Film Award for his outstanding choreography. The award was presented by the Honorable Former President of India, K.R. Narayanan.
