India’s booming IPO market has given rich returns to investors in the last couple of years, with several of these listings turning lucrative for top Indian bollywood and cricket stars too, who invested in such companies well ahead of their public issues. Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor’s investments in DroneAcharya Aerial Innovations have reaped rich dividends for the Bollywood stars upon its SME listing. Aamir Khan acquired 46,600 shares, 0.26 percent stake, in the pre-IPO round for Rs 25 lakh. Ranbir Kapoor picked up 37,200 shares, 0.21 percent stake, for Rs 20 lakh. Pre-IPO price for buyers was around Rs 53.59 per share.

DroneAcharya Aerial Innovations made its debut on the bourses on December 23, 2022 and got listed at Rs 102 on BSE SME exchange. The stock closed at Rs 155.85 on March 7, giving a 45.52 percent return since its listing.

Aamir Khan’s investment would be at Rs 72.62 lakh at current levels, while Ranbir Kapoor’s shares would be at Rs 57.97 lakh – nearly tripling in value.

Azad Engineering: Sachin Tendulkar

The cricket maestro has hit it out of the park with his investment in Azad Engineering. Sachin Tendulkar bought 438,120 shares in Azad Engineering at an average price of Rs 114.10 in March 2023 during its pre-IPO round, acquiring stake worth Rs 4.99 crore.

Azad Engineering got listed on December 28, 2023 at Rs 720; it closed at Rs 1,355.3 on March 7. Based on current market price, Sachin Tendulkar’s investment would be valued at Rs 59.39 crore, growing nearly 12 times.

Nykaa: Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif

Alia Bhatt invested Rs 4.95 crore in Falguni Nayar’s Nykaa during July 2020. When the company got listed on November 10, 2021, Bhatt’s investment grew to Rs 54 crore, with about 11 times growth.

Katrina Kaif had set up a joint venture with the company, Nykaa-KK Beauty, in 2018 with an investment of Rs 2.04 crore. Katrina Kaif’s investment grew to Rs 22 crore, growing nearly 11 times at the time of listing.

However, the Bollywood actresses may have lost some of these gains as Nykaa’s stock plunged after the listing.

Nykaa’s shares got listed at Rs 2,129 on November 10, 2021. The company announced bonus share in 1:5 ratio in October 2022 and on March 7, Nykaa closed at Rs 156.5, down 60.18 percent from its listing price.

Mamaearth: Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty Kundra had invested Rs 6.7 crore in Mamaearth as she bought 16 lakh shares at Rs 41.86 per share. She sold 13.93 lakh shares in the Offer For Sale (OFS) portion of Mamaearth’s IPO. Mamaearth got listed at Rs 330 on November 7, 2023.

Shilpa Shetty earned Rs 45.14 crore through the public issue. The actress still owns around 2.3 lakh shares in the company.

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn also got blockbuster returns through his investment in Panorama Studios, though Devgn acquired shares in a preferential issue, and not pre-IPO. On March 4, Devgn got 1 lakh equity shares at Rs 274 per share, valuing the investment at Rs 2.74 crore. The price is at a significant discount to the market price of Rs 948.4, the closing price on the previous session prior to allotment, March 2. The stock closed at Rs 995 on March 7, putting Devgn’s investment at Rs 9.95 crore. At current market level, it has given return of 363.13 percent.
