Connor McDavid sends two-word message to Auston Matthews for new McDonald’s advert – Source: Imagn
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews are part of a new promo for a popular fast-food chain. In a post from January 6 on McDavid’s IG profile, the two superstars are seen in an empty rink, challenging one another to a skills competition.
The reel, as part of a McDonald’s promotion in Canada, shows the two players exchanging words. In the conversation, Matthews asks McDavid:
“What’s in the bag?”
Connor McDavid then replies:
“Lunch. Big Mac.”
The response draws a challenge from Matthews:
“Play you for it.”
The exchange concludes with McDavid stating:
“Game on. First one to miss watches the winner eat.”
Here’s a look at the ad run on McDonald’s IG profile.
Connor McDavid shared the ad on his Instagram stories and added a caption directed at the Leafs’ captain:
“IT’S ON @AUSTONMATTHEWS.”

The commercial states that the puck drop is set for January 7, 2025. So, it remains to be seen what the two stars have planned for this offseason as McDonald’s looks to promote its brand in Canada.
Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews on a collision course at the 4 Nations
Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews are set to be part of the 4 Nations tournament set for February. The NHL has scrapped the All-Star game this season in favor of a best-on-best tournament, with the best players in the world representing their home countries.
This edition features Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland. McDavid is the presumptive captain for Team Canada with Matthews likely wearing the C for the American side.
According to a piece in The Athletic from December 10, the betting odds favor a US-Canada final, given the sheer amount of talent on the American and Canadian squads. For instance, the US side is so deep, it could ice as many as seven full lines.
Meanwhile, Canada has the most balanced lineup of all, providing the depth and scoring needed to make a serious run at the title.
While Sweden and Finland have strong sides, these two teams don’t seem like serious contenders, at least not in this tournament.
Ultimately, the 4 Nations will be a preview of what could be the 2026 Olympics in Italy. The NHL has expressed its willingness to allow NHLers to play for their home countries. So, the 4 Nations could be just the stepping stone the league needs to generate hype for next year’s Olympic tourney.
Players and fans hope the 4 Nations will succeed as the current generation of NHLers has had limited international experience in a best-on-best tournament. As such, fans can expect the best from everyone on the ice, especially McDavid and Matthews.
