Baseball legend Darryl Strawberry has revealed he suffered a heart attack on Monday night – but is recovering well in hospital with his family by his side.

The 17-year Major League Baseball pro, who played for the Mets, Dodgers, Giants and Yankees, posted a photo from his sick bed just hours after the health scare, which came on the eve of his 62nd birthday.

Writing in a post on Instagram, he said: ‘Praising God for His amazing grace and loving mercy in saving my life this evening from a heart attack.

‘I am so happy and honored to report that all is well. So thankful for the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly and bringing me through a stent-procedure that has brought my heart to total restoration!!!

‘Your prayers are so absolutely appreciated as I continue to recover, in Jesus Name!’

Strawberry began his career with the New York team in 1980 and spent eight years in Queens, being voted an All-Star in each of them, and winning the World Series in 1986.

In 1991, he moved to the west coast with the Los Angeles Dodgers, before spending a season with the San Francisco Giants in 1994.

For the 1995 season he headed back east to the Yankees and won two further World Series with the Bronx Bombers, in 1996 and 1999 – his final season in the big leagues.
