It’s been a long time since teams have been in pursuit of Alex Bregman. The Astros star has been in trade rumors right after the 2024 season. Despite several teams being behind him, Bregman’s free agency has prolonged beyond expectations.
The two-time World Series winner is a top free-agent slugger. Bregman and Pete Alonso are the top two free agents. Both sluggers are first basemen, and Bregman stands a better chance of finding a team. The Astros seemed to have backed out on the All-Star because of his expected price.
Bregman is reportedly seeking $200 million, and the Astros have offered him $156 million for six years. Scott Boras is probably playing the bargaining game, hoping to get the best for his agent. Some believe Bregman might have priced himself out of the market, especially after the Yankees and a few other teams have fallen short of his target.
According to former Yankees slugger Erik Kratz, Alex Bregman will sign with a team soon, but several teams have dropped out already.
“The size of the contract has scared teams away from signing him. Yankees are off the list, the Astros are now off the list, the teams that he could go to are dwindling. I thought there might be a chance he’d go to the Phillies. Now you only have two teams and really one team is just onto everybody. I just feel he may have priced himself out of the market,” Kratz said.
Boston Red Sox Compete With The Detroit Tigers For Alex Bregman
The Boston Red Sox are now the front runners to pursue the star slugger. The Red Sox were behind several sluggers, including free-agent pitchers. Right after signing Walker Buehler, they have turned their heads towards Bregman.
Buehler and Bregman are close friends, and the former Dodgers star is trying to bring him to Boston. Rumors state the Red Sox are ready to offer Bregman $165 million for six years.
Alex Bregman would prefer to go back to the Astros rather than sign with the Red Sox for an extra nine million. If the Red Sox increase their offer, they could be his final destination.
