President-elect Donald Trump believes Wayne Gretzky would make a great governor for Canada. Trump, who had earlier in the week suggested that Canada should join the USA as the 51st state of the country, spoke about Gretzky during a dinner that he hosted for Republican governors on Thursday.
“I was with Wayne Gretzky,” Trump said. “I said, ‘Wayne, would you like to be the governor of Canada?’ I can’t imagine anybody doing any better than Wayne. Wayne was not too interested. But I think he probably would have liked statehood. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a great guy. He’s the great one. We call him The Great One, right? He’s a great hockey player.”
Trump has made several remarks this week that have caught the media’s attention. He said that he would rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. The president-elect also spoke about retaking control of the Panama Canal and taking control of Greenland. The 78-year-old will take the oath of office and become President of the United States on January 20.
Donald Trump also wanted Wayne Gretzky to be Canada’s PM
Trump had on December 26, called for Wayne Gretzky to become the prime minister of Canada. Posting on his Truth Social account, Trump had said:
“I just left Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One” as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement.”
The post was part of a wider campaign Trump had launched at the time criticizing Canada PM Justin Trudeau. Trudeau resigned as Canada’s premier on January 6.
The Gretzky family and Trump have a rather cordial relationship. Gretzky, his wife Janet, son Trevor, daughter Paulina and her husband Dustin Johnson attended Trump’s election night party at Mar-a-Lago last year.
