Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch discussed Connor McDavid’s line partners ahead of Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Knoblauch is spoilt for choice when it comes to his forward line, given the great form his players are in.
McDavid and Hyman have been one of his top forward pairs in recent seasons, but Knoblauch has had Hyman and Jeff Skinner on the third line this year. Speaking to the media ahead of the Pittsburgh game, Knoblauch said that McDavid and Hyman would definitely play together at some point.
“In practice, we mix things up often, and players get familiar with different combinations during games—whether it’s after a penalty, power play, or someone in the box,” the coach said. “So yes, McDavid and Hyman will definitely play together at some point.
“Right now, it’s more about rewarding Connor Brown for his play. He’s been on the third or fourth lines most of the time, but since moving up to the top line, he’s done a great job. That said, Hyman, after a 50-goal season, is obviously a top-six guy, and you don’t put someone like that on the third line long-term.”
The Oilers recovered from their mini-slump after the holiday break, during which they lost on the road to the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.
Since then, they have won four straight games and will be looking to make it five in a row against the Penguins. They are second in the Pacific Division, six points behind the Vegas Golden Knights.
Oilers GM Stan Bowman opens up about team’s offense led by Connor McDavid
Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman, in an interview on Sportsnet, praised the team’s recent performances, crediting Kris Knoblauch and team captain Connor McDavid for their great form.
“Well, the top six have been incredibly consistent with their production, and that’s hard to do over a full season,” he said. “Kris has the foresight to try different things, so that when we’re in a game and things aren’t going well, we can go to combinations that are different for the game, but not totally new to the players. I like that.”
During the phone interview, Bowman talked about the Oilers’ upcoming schedule and prospective trade strategy as well. He also opened up about the team’s playoff chances and the times he rebuilt franchises, getting them back to the top.
